The Colorado Avalanche extended qualifying offers to all of their restricted free agents except Denis Malgin and Ryan Merkley by the deadline to retain negotiating rights to those RFAs.The list of players who have been extended qualifying offers is made up of Bo Byram, Ben Meyers, Justus Annunen, Sampo Ranta, Alex Newhook (who was traded to Montreal) and new trade acquisition Ross Colton.Malgin and Merkley, both acquired in midseason trades during 2022-23, will become unrestricted free agents Saturday as a result of not receiving qualifying offers. Merkley didn’t appear in an Avalanche game, but Malgin scored 13 goals in 65 games and even slotted into Colorado’s top-six forward group when the team was dealing with injuries. The deadline for eligible RFAs to file for salary arbitration is July 5. Malgin was arbitration-eligible, so the Avalanche allowing him to go to the open market is a sign that the process might have led to an average annual value Colorado wouldn’t have felt comfor...LAX bans single-use plastic water bottles to reduce waste

Beginning today, travelers will no longer be able to use plastic water bottles in the Los Angeles International Airport, the company announced. The company tweeted, “Effective today, LAX will ban the sale of single-use plastic water bottles.” The ban comes two years after the L.A. Board of Airport Commissioners announced in 2021 that they’d be phasing out single-use plastic bottles at LAX and Van Nuys airports to move toward zero-waste in their facilities and fight climate change. "Eliminating single-use plastic water bottles is the right thing to do for our airports, our communities and our environment," said Justin Erbacci, Chief Executive Officer, LAWA. "We thank L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti for leading the city’s vision for a better, more sustainable future and our Board of Airport Commissioners for taking action to achieve zero waste at our airports by 2045."To aid the transition of banning single-use plastic water bottles, the L.A. As an excessive heatwave warning covers July 4th festivities in SoCal, fire officials are concerned as scorching temps amid wildfire season may be a recipe for disaster. The threat of fireworks or explosives igniting a wildfire remains high as Inland Empire fire crews remain on alert throughout the holiday weekend.Earlier on Friday, the Lantz Fire in Moreno Valley promoted evacuations as it grew to about 15 acres. Video from the scene shows air crews overhead working to extinguish the flames which had grown dangerously close to Russ Holt’s home.“My kids are the ones who called the fire department,” said Holt. “You can see the smoke right over the hill, so they ran over there to see what was going on and they see the homeless camp burning.”“The fire started in an area that we see a lot in Riverside County,” said Rob Roseen with Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire. “It’s an area that’s got a lot of light, grassy fuels.”A home burns in the Juniper Fire in Riverside County, California. CINCINNATI (AP) — Spencer Steer hit a game-winning two-run home run in the 11th inning and the Cincinnati Reds overcame Alexis Díaz’s first blown save of the season in a wild 7-5 win over the stumbling San Diego Padres on Friday. Elly De La Cruz doubled to drive in Jonathan India with the tying run and De La Cruz tried to score from third on Nick Senzel’s grounder to third off Drew Carlton, but was called out because he touched catcher Gary Sánchez’s left foot — a call that survived video review. Steer followed with his homer off Drew Carlton (2-1).“It was pretty cool that it worked out there,” Steer said. “We think we have a win and then the call doesn’t go our way. I know I kind of said one of those moments. It was a weird situations. I probably won’t have another one in my career. You wait to see what happens.”Sánchez drove in Xander Bogaerts from second base in the top of the 11th to put the Padres up 5-4, but they couldn’t avoid their sixth straight loss. PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Josiah Gray scooted off the field after he fanned Bryson Stott on a high hard one to escape a scoring threat that gave the Washington Nationals a rare jolt on the mound.Gray could be excused for the animated exit in perhaps his inning of the season.“I don’t show much emotion, but I do in big spots like that,” he said.Stone Garrett hit a two-run homer and Gray forced two pop-ups and struck out a batter that left the potential go-ahead run stranded in the pivotal sixth inning to lead the Nationals to a 2-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.Staked to a 2-1 lead, Gray (6-6) shut down the meat of Philadelphia’s order after he let the first two runners reach in the sixth. The right-hander retired Bryce Harper on a pop up to third, got J.T. Realmuto to pop to second and struck out Stott swinging on a 95 mph fastball.“That’s something we talked about that he’s learned from last year to this year, just staying in the moment,” Nationals manager Dave ...65-year-old Bernhard Langer leads US Senior Open at difficult SentryWorld

STEVENS POINT, Wis. (AP) — Bernhard Langer has been able to avoid most of the trouble at SentryWorld in the U.S. Senior Open. He still was far from unscathed Friday in a 3-under 68 that gave him the second-round lead.“Believe it or not, I had two three-putts and a hit a sand wedge from the middle of the fairway into the water hazard, which is painful when you think about that from 100 yards,” the 65-year-old German star said after his morning round.Langer had six birdies and three bogeys a day after having a birdie and a bogey in an opening 71. On Friday, he hit 12 of 14 fairways on the Robert Trent Jones Jr.-designed course with thick rough and tricky, inconsistent greens. At 3-under 139, Langer was one of only five players under par. The scoring average Friday was 76.54, down from 77.34 on Thursday.“The course is tough, but it’s fair, and it’s a great setup,” Langer said. “I’m fortunate to be playing well and look forward to the weekend.”The 2010 U.S. Senior Open winne...Latest news
