Wild lock up goaltender Filip Gustavsson on 3-year, $11.25 million deal The biggest task of the offseason is finally complete for the Wild. They agreed to terms with Filip Gustavsson on Monday, keeping the goaltender in Minnesota on a 3-year, $11.25 million contract with average annual value of $3.75 million. This agreement helps the Wild avoid an arbitration hearing with the 25-year-old Gustavsson, which was scheduled for later this week. It seemed things were heading in that direction with general manager Bill Guerin previously unable to work out a deal with Gustavsson’s representation. In the end, though, both sides came to a compromise, and the Wild will head into next season with Gustavsson and future hall of famer Marc-Andre Fleury. The new contract is a nice reward for Gustavsson after he posted a 22-9-7 record last season to go along with a 2.10 goals against average and .931 save percentage. Not bad for a guy that was content returning to his native Sweden if things didn’t work out last season.Gustavsson proved to be a pleasant surpris...

Lowline fire expanding north of Gunnison as firefighters retreat and set backfires The lightning-sparked Lowline fire burning in western Colorado north of Gunnison has expanded to 1,331 acres as firefighters retreat and set deliberate backfires in an effort to reduce thick fallen trees in the forests. And federal land managers on Monday said they anticipate eventual ecological benefits. The fire is burning on public land managed by the U.S. Forest Service 14 miles north of Gunnison, and on recent hot days, embers spread, igniting spot fires in forest areas that firefighters could not safely reach. The back-burning tactic is intended to deny approaching flames fuel so that the fire eventually can be contained. It grew by more than 300 acres over the weekend, according to the latest aerial infrared mapping.“In places where we can’t safely insert firefighters, we are backing off – areas where heavy trees have come down,” said Rick Barton, spokesman for the interagency team of 419 firefighters tasked with suppressing the fire.“You will see increased acreage in the...
